Fort Worth Dunbars Bob Jones, with 46-29 record
Fort Worth Dunbar head football coach Bob Jones was named to succeed Bill Smith as head football coach and athletic coordinator at Aldine Senior High School by the Aldine ISD Board of Education during its Feb. 24 meeting.
Jones, who served as head coach at Dunbar for seven seasons, will assume his duties immediately.
Smith announced his retirement in December of 2003 after serving as the Mustangs head football coach for 29 years (he has worked in Aldine ISD for 39 years). During his 29 years as head coach, Smith led Aldine High to 237 wins (fifth best all time among Class 5A coaches in Texas) and the state and national championship in 1990. His 1989 team reached the state finals before falling to Odessa Permian.
Jones forged a 46-29 record in his seven seasons at Dunbar, a school that was better known for its basketball program prior to his taking over the football program. In the seven years he spent at Dunbar, Jones led the team to four district titles and five playoff appearances. While at Dunbar, Jones led his team to 28 straight district victories and the team has won 31 of its last 32 league games.
Jones received his bachelors degree in physical education and health education from Kearney State College (Nebraska) in 1982 and his masters degree in supervision of physical education from that same school in 1985. While at Kearney State, Jones was coached by current Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez.
He began his coaching career in 1980 at the University of Nebraska where he served as freshman offensive line coach and assistant varsity offensive line coach. In 1983, he joined Missouri Western College where he coached wide receivers before moving onto North Dakota State University in 1985 where he also coached receivers.
In 1986, he became defensive coordinator at Red Oak High School, a suburb of Dallas. He also served as defensive coordinator at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO, Pleasanton High School in Pleasanton, Texas and at Terry High School in Rosenberg. In 1994, Jones joined the staff at Converse Judson High School, where he worked under D.W. Rutledge, one of the states most successful high school coaches. In 1997, Jones was named head coach at Fort Worth Dunbar.
