Tombstone Update

The News has received dozens of calls about the old German tombstone found on Reeveston Road including several translations.

They indicate that it was a marker for a woman whose maiden name was Weise and whose married name Goerltz. The top of the stone reads “Here rests in God” and at the bottom it says “Separation is our loss; To see each other our hope.”

The News has learned that there is an old abandoned German cemetery off Lauder Road and an attempt will be made to determine if the stone came from there.

Some readers are checking records at cemeteries in Houston, Tomball, and Schulenburg and still others are using the internet to search state death records that have been kept since 1904. With all that help, it seems certain that the old stone will be returned to its rightful place. Thanks to all!
