Annual health check ups are important to maintain good health at any age. It is especially important to monitor childrens health at back to school time. Eligibility for sports programs requires students have a recent physical, and schools need up to date immunization records. Students learn better when they are healthy and can see the board and hear the teacher, but too often the need for childrens glasses or hearing aids goes unnoticed for years.
One roadblock to regular health screenings is cost. The Harris County Hospital District makes medical exams easy and fun with the free Aldine Back to School Health Fair. This event is open to everyone regardless of his or her financial situation.
At the Fair, participants can check their eligibility for a Gold Card that can give them free or reduced cost health care in the future.
The fair will be held on Monday July 28 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Aldine Community Health Center at 4755 Aldine Mail Route.
The services provided include eligibility, sport physicals, immunizations, sickle cell anemia checks, foot screenings, diabetes and cholesterol checks, dental screenings, blood pressure check and vision and hearing screenings.
Fun entertainment will help distract children from the pinch of shots. Music, clowns, and a puppet show will keep little ones entertained. And goodies and snacks will also be available.
This is the fifth annual fair. Administrators say it has been very successful in the past with lots of families participating.
Parents are reminded to accompany their children and to bring shot records if they plan to receive immunizations.
Anyone wanting a sports physical should bring the forms required by the school.
Sports physicals are limited based on the number of doctors available.
