Benefit Barbecue on September 6th & 7th

There will be a Benefit Barbecue from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, September 6th and 7th at 4335 Hopper Road. Proceeds from the Benefit will go to help pay the funeral expenses of Steven Carnes.

Health Fair at Greenspoint on September 7th

New Believers Christian Church will sponsor a health fair from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, September 7th in the Greenspoint Mall. The fair will offer free mammograms for women over age 35 who have no health insurance, HIV testing, blood presusure and blood sugar screenings and dental exams. Stop Smoking at Community Clinic Cessation Program

The Community Clinic will be offering a smoking cessation program in the fall. The treatment program will be from 8-9 a.m. for eight Wednesdays and will include a support group. Communities Against Tobacco host training session

Community of Hope to sponsor health fair

The Hope Community Circle of Care will sponsor a health fair from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st in the Greenspoint Mall Community Room. Groups, ministries and agencies are invited to set up a booth at no cost. The days events will include primary screenings, check-ups, CHIP representatives, clowns, health care providers and ministries, giveaways and more. Northeast community Center offers classes

Basic English as a Second Language classes will be held at the Northeast Community Center, 10918 1/2 Bentley, every Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon beginning September 4th. Prospective students must be at least 17 years of age and must be assessed for placement. Testing will be held on August 26th from 9 a.m. until noon.
Star Track Orientation for GED classes will be held on August 27 and 29th from 6-9 p.m. Classes will be held from 6-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday night from September 3rd until December 5th.

Grief support offered by Houston Hospice

Houston Hospice is presenting a six-week grief education/support program, “Life After Loss,” developed by the American Cancer Society to help bereaved people better understand the grief process, their emotions, and how to cope with them.
Houston Hospice Bereavement Services will offer a combination of teaching, discussion, and learning activities for individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
The session will be held from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays beginning September 5th through October 10th.

Houston Public Library needs bilingual volunteers for computer training classes

If you’re a computer wiz the Houston Public Library needs you! They are looking for bilingual volunteer instructors that can teach from Computer Basics to MS Excel. The Library offers free computer Training Classes for the public every month. Classes are available at seven Houston Public Library Branches. Technology outreach now registering

The William Booth Computer Learning Center offers 16 hours of computer instruction for $55.00. Classes meet for two hours twice a week for four weeks, Morning, afternoon and evening class schedules are available, Students can enjoy individual attention from expert teachers who are personable and very easy to understand. August courses are Basic Computing (Windows 98), Word I and Excel I. The computer lab is conveniently located on the first floor lobby of The Salvation Army William Booth Gardens, a beautiful seniors residential complex, at 808 Frawley, one block south of the intersection of Calvacade and Irvingron.

Christian meditation group meets on Fridays

Church food pantry has new hours

The Oak Glen Church of God of Prophecy, 661 Aldine Mail Route, will have new days and hours for its food pantry. The pantry will be open 2 days a week (Wednesday and Friday) from 3-5 p.m to serve people in zip codes 77037, 77039, 77060, 77093.
We will need a recent utility bill (no older than 30 days) to prove eligibility. An application must be filled out and social security cards or birth certificates for each family member must be presented. Each family will be given a 3 to 5 day supply of food.
