EAST ALDINE – What does a Houston Mayor do on his time off? Well of course he tours another neighboring district that he has heard much about, but never spent time visiting previously.

At least that is what he told Flor Zarzoza, when she invited him to see the progress that the District has made to the quality of life and the environment, since its inception in 2001.

Flor is a board member of the East Aldine Management District, and an avid spokesperson for the improvements here.

Along with East Aldine staffer Victor Beserra, they spent almost 4 hours showing Whitmire the sights of the District.

This included BakerRipley campus, the adjacent Town Center with the amphitheater, splash pad, lake, Lone Star College campus, the Westfield fire department building and equipment, the East Aldine District headquarters office building, the Neighborhood Depository and Recycling Center, Darren Almendarez Community Center and Keith-Wiess park, which is a city owned park managed by the district.

Whitmire indicated he was especially impressed by the Fab Lab at BakerRipley, which Jonathan Rath explained to him.

He also mentioned how clean the neighborhoods were, and how the streets were in good condition compared with his city.

Whitmire indicated he would plan on coming back again, since he ran out of time to thoroughly visit Keith-Wiess park, the Harris County’s 9-1-1 call center, and other facilities throughout the district.
