District helps Disabilities turn into Possibilities at Fun Event

EAST ALDINE – As part of their community event series, the East Aldine District hosted a day of “Unlimited possAbilities” for the public last Saturday from 9am to 2pm at Town Center. Dozens of folks of all ages participated, some with disabilities and some without.

The idea behind the event was a day of fun for those who normally don’t get out to participate in sports and public events.

Event coordinator Alma DeAlejandro organized a series of games and activities for everyone to enjoy something. These included a Fun Run to start the day at 9am with help from Gloria Suarez of the Bee Abled organization. Participants could walk, run, use wheelchairs, or walkers. Some even had canes and crutches.

This was followed by basketball games at 10am, assisted by Quentin Parks of The Fit Crew.

These two activities were followed by an awards ceremony on the Amphitheater stage. There was also music by a DJ, and at 11am a group gathered to have a Parachute Twist, helped by deputies from the Sheriff’s office. There also was a motivational speaker, Gabriel Cantu, relating his own experiences with disabilities. This was followed by a raffle for prizes that included unique wheelchair hubcaps from Izzy Wheels.

In the afternoon, there was a class in making Textile Art, taught by Tori Christensen, and a Yoga Class led by Cindy Samudio. Textile Art is especially good for those who have limited sight or tactile limitations.

There were also all-day activities, such as Face painting, Balloon Twisting, Bubbles, a Train Ride, a Moonwalk, Fire truck courtesy of Westfield Fire Department, Ambulance, Free Tee Shirts, food trucks, and a very popular petting zoo. The Sheriff’s office also brought their mounted units, and children were able to see and touch the horses.

Sponsors and supporters included Westfield Fire Department, Walmart, Suvida Healthcare, Harris County Emergency Corps, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Aldine ISD, Bee Abled, Brookside Funeral Home, Dignity Funeral Home, The Fit Crew, Lone Star College EA, and BakerRipley.
